Back home, I have a 6 year old Shih Tzu named Lucky, who is basically my playmate, cuddle-buddy, and loyal companion all in one. Every day after school, I would come home to find Lucky sitting on the couch eagerly waiting for me to hug and kiss him hello. Coming home to such an adorable little creature always put the biggest smile on my face and automatically lifted my mood! If you’re a dog lover like I am, you’d be pleased to hear that not only does owning a dog make you happier, but a being a dog owner can also improve your health!
Studies have supported the idea that owning a pet (but more specifically a dog) helps lower the risk of heart disease. This is because playing with dogs produces more serotonin and dopamine in your brain, which boost your mood and make you happier overall and less stressed. Less stress also lead to decreased blood pressure and thus, a healthier heart! In addition, dog owners tend to be more active than non-dog owners since most dogs need to be taken out on walks and most require an active lifestyle in order to maintain their health. Therefore, by taking care of the dog’s well-being, the owner is improving their own health as well!
